By the end of the chapter, you should be able to understand:
- scientific and intuitive thinking/management (HL only) (AO2).
- management and leadership (AO2)
- leadership styles, including autocratic, paternalistic, democratic, laissez-faire and situational (AO3)
Scientific thinking/management
- Decision making based on gathered data to make rational, objective and logical decisions.
- Based both on qualitative and quantitative data.
- Takes more time but can minimise risks of decisions.
- Historical data used could be unreliable or unrepresentative of the current situation.
Scientific decision making steps:
- Where are we now? - Discern the current opportunity or problem.
- Where do we want to be?
- How do we get there? - - Using available data to implement plan of actions.
Intuitive thinking/management
- Often used to resolve ethical dilemmas.
- Involves additional sensory perceptions and emotions to make informed choices.
- Quick decision making method. Suitable method when reliable facts and data are not readily available.
- Intuition could lead to mistakes.
